This gorgeous bit of roadside eyecandy is located on the commercial section of Route 13 in Dover, Delaware and shows what neat stuff exists off of the highway:
Kirby & Holloway’s main claim to fame is being a manufacturer of scrapple, which some in these parts consider a delicacy. Me? First time I saw it I thought someone had grilled and burned a kitchen sponge, but hubby was thrilled with it. When a food is proud to claim, “contains no snouts!” well, you just lose me there. But I digress.
The restaurant isn’t as fancy to look at, but when we did eat in there the food was OK regular diner type food. But that sign is a glorious sight day or night, and worth a swing off of the highway.

Yes, the sign is great, but the food is good too. Their french apple pie is the best I have ever had. Wonderful deserts, not to mention the fresh yeast rolls. Very inexpensive, and friendly service. Everyone says their breakfast is the best. And, as a scrapple person, I have always preferred Kirby & Holloway over Rapa scrapple, but they are both very good.
Good to know! I will have to give it another shot next time we’re driving down the beach, which is quite often. I’m always looking for an excuse to get off of the highway and into Dover.
Thank you for the post about Kirby & Holloways restaurant! My boyfriend isn’t so happy because now I am going to bug him until we make the drive (from MD) to the restaurant.
Kirby & Holloway have the best sausage on the face of the earth! Yeah, I am that serious about it.
Thanks so much!
Erin- I hope the Kirby and Holloway restaurant does not disappoint you! I love the sign but haven’t eaten there in ages. Please let us know how it is!
Great news! Kirby & Holloway now has a Facebook group, which I have already joined, and the restaurant now has a super website. Lots of photos and information. http://www.kirbyandhollowayrestaurant.com.
Sorry about that. The correct website is: http://www.rirbyandhollowayfamilyrestaurant.com (it’s a long one, but worth the trouble).
OK, one more time. http://www.Kirbyandhollowayfamilyrestaurant.com. I think my hand is starting to hurt.
Thanks for the link Jeff- third time’s a charm! I’ll make a link in the main article, and check out the place next time we’re swinging down to Sussex County!
