You never know where a “watercooler conversation” at work (or in this case Microwave Conversation) will lead, but surpisingly today it lead to Doumar’s Cones and Barbecue in Norfolk VA.
Doumar’s is one of those places that you just have to try. Growing up it was a 3 or 4 times a year treat. Even though we really only lived a half hour 45 minutes away, dealing with tunnel traffic to get there was always a hassle my folks didn’t want to deal with in the summertime.
Last time I was home, I made a special effort to get to Doumar’s. They have traditional car hop service (no roller skates), but I elected to go inside for a change. Very small dining room / counter service. The hops come in yelling out their orders to the Soda jerks and the cook staff. Nice. If you do get down there, I recommend either the steak sandwich, the minced pork barbecue sandwich with homemade cole slaw. Actually they are rather small (1950s portions) so you could go for one of each if you wanted to. The Lime Ade without a doubt, is made fresh for each order. And you have to have a ice cream cone.
Of course you have to get an ice cream cone, as ice cream cones were invented by these folks over 100 years ago!
According to the Domar’s website:
“Abe Doumar’s famous creation, the Original hand-rolled pure food cone filled with delicious ice cream, was the first sold in 1904 at the St. Louis Exposition. The cones are still made by hand today”.
Thanks, Hudge – for the Retro Roadtip- see you at the microwave/watercooler real soon!
