Retro Roadhusband and Mod Betty don’t have any kids of their own, but that doesn’t mean we can’t borrow ‘em for a while when we want to show the younger generation how fun it is to go to vintage, retro and cool old places.
One type of Retro Roadmap destination that’s always a hit with the kiddles is a diner, so we stopped by Wilson’s Diner in Waltham MA, a straight shot down Route 20 E off 128 (or 95 for you picky people!)
Ta-DA!!!
Wilson’s Diner has been a fixture of Main Street Waltham since 1949 when the diner was delivered from the Worcester Lunch Car Company. Worcester diners are all numbered, this one being 819, and according to the reliable source of Diner Hotline, “It is probably 97% original on the inside and 100% original on the outside.” True that!
If you’re looking for the “tag” with the number, it’s above one of the doors. I didn’t get a chance to scope it out, as I was more concerned with getting a booth for me and the three wiggly kiddles!
Everyone was excited for breakfast and I told them they could get anything they wanted from the menu:
The Retro Roadgirls got their own combos of eggs and toast (with Auntie Mod Betty benefitting from the extra bacon on one plate), Regular followers of Retro Roadboy will already know what he ordered – PANCAKES! With all the syrup he could squeeze!
I asked Retro Roadgirl M to snap a photo of the seldom seen Worcester Diners clock. I was pleased to see the clock was still in operation, but unfortunately it let us know that it was time to hit the road.
We enjoyed our meals in this bustling diner on a Saturday morning, then hopped back in the Retro Roadmobile and headed up to the birthday party for my Gram, their Great Great Grammie – who turned 94 that day!
Hopefully this stop for breakfast on our Retro Roadtrip will be a fond memory for the Retro Roadkids. I hope they’ll look back on this photo and think of all the good times they had with “Auntique Beth”

Why can’t I have an Auntie Mod Betty to take me to these cool place? I assure you, though, there would be no surplus of bacon if I was around. Looks delicious and SO COOL!!!!
But Darling, I’m Your Auntie Mod Betty!

Hahaha!!! If you’re anything like Roz, it’s a deal (although you’re definitely not old enough to be my aunt). I’ll try not to be as creepy as Patrick!!!
Roz was great, an inspiration to Aunties of all ages! I thought Patrick was a bit of a “wet rag” as my mother would say- but glad that he and Pegeen (what a name!) finally hit it off
I remember hitting this spot in my crazy college days when I went to Bentley!! Glad to see its still there.
Yep! It’s an institution, and we did see a few people coming in for “Saturday morning after a late Friday night” breakfast!
Darn, I was close to here last week on our roadtrip. Went to Boston for the day and could have had dinner here!
Mary – I know what it feels like to be “so close but so far away” from a Retro Roadmap worthy destination! Hopefully this will make you feel better, in that Wilson’s Diner isn’t open for dinner, just for breakfast and lunch
