While Mod Betty has always been a fan of the little Mom n Pop places, she’s also always moved by the grandeur of historic public places that have been around forever – and it runs in the family! When Retro Roadmum wanted to celebrate a milestone birthday years ago, we stayed at the Mt. Washington for our first and only family vacation, and have fond memories and film photos to remember our weekend there.
While I’ve always wanted to add this grand hotel on the Retro Roadmap, I haven’t been up there since then. But luckily our pal Linda The Distracted Wanderer got to stay there this fall and you can read an excerpt from her visit below!
The Omni Mount Washington Resort:
Historically Comfortable Elegance in New Hampshire’s White Mountains
Like something out of a fairy tale, the huge white castle-like structure with its bright red roof sat at the base of Mount Washington and spoke of bygone days when families would arrive via train to spend long, leisurely summers enjoying the spectacular beauty of the White Mountain region. It reminded me of one of my favorite romantic movies – “Somewhere In Time” – and one of the scariest – “The Shining” – and I knew that someday, somehow, someway I would figure out how to walk in the footsteps of the privileged gentry before me and become its guest.

I’ll admit that THIS is really my kind of place!
I love this kind of place too Lizzie! Alas the “Retro Road budget” does not allow us to stay in swanky old places like this, but when we do have the funds I would love to stay in all of the places listed on the National Register’s Historic Hotels map! http://www.historichotels.org/hotels-resorts/
