If  you want that authentic old-school Italian food, decor and experience, bump Sam’s in Cobble Hill to the top of your list when in Brooklyn. We all know places like this are an endangered species!

Opened in 1930 by Mario Migliaccio and his wife Rose, Sam’s is still run by their son Louis. The family owns the building, which is probably why they are still able to stand strong here despite the changing neighborhood.

They’re famous for their brick oven pizza so of course we had to get it. Delish, but not cheap (note, cash only!)

Some people say you can’t eat ambiance, but I say it sure is a nice sauce. Speaking of sauce we also split a spaghetti bolognese, which was very good as well.

And speaking of ambiance,  I’d rather have a solid meal in a cool old place that has been around for a long time, supporting a business that has survived, than spend my money in a hipster locale, so the fact that Sam’s seems untouched by time made everything better in my book.

One fond memory I have of our visit is the large family with little kids sitting across the aisle from us, trying to remember the beginning part of the Constitution. When I heard them struggling I could not help but interject with the Schoolhouse Rock version of the Preamble that always is in my head. We laughed and they countered with the 50 Nifty United States, which is one I never learned, but it was fun to bond with local folks. And how cool they were bringing their kids here! Ah, the generations.

Mod Betty isn’t much of a cook, so I’m cool with going to Sam’s any time – just sayin’!
