Seaside Country Store Fenwick Island DE

Posted on: June 23, 2016

For many folks, a vacation in Delaware just isn’t complete without a stop at the Seaside Country Store. Located in the southernmost part of the state on a sliver of land just above the Maryland state line, the landmark bright red building has been called “The Most Unusual Store on the Shore.”

Family owned and operated, the store started out in 1970 no bigger than the Food Room you walk into upon entering. You’ll note the nostalgic atmosphere created back then, harkening back to an even earlier era. Wooden plank flooring is topped with barrels filled with old-fashioned candy, baskets – hanging from the rough-hewn rafters – can be taken down for shopping, and shiny brass lamps line the fudge counter.

Famous for their spreadable cheeses (cheddar horseradish is popular) and homemade fudge, the shop now has two levels expanded to accommodate a wide variety of gift-type goods. From jams and jellies, salsas, souvenirs and toys to soaps, candles and fashions, this place is a hit with the ladies. The second floor is chockablock full of nautical decor and year round displays of holiday decorations. Oh, and doilies. They’ve got a whole display of lace doilies.

Closed during the months of December, January and February (and then on expanded weekends until the weather warms up) It’s always a hoot to drive past in the winter. The windows are covered with large signs proclaiming WE. ARE. NOT. OPEN. But when they’re open, you know that the summer is officially here.
