Spence’s Bazaar is one of Mod Betty’s fave go-to places in all of Kent County – on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, that is – since those are the only days they’re open. Part auction, part flea market, part Amish food market, it’s a distinctive one-of-a-kind destination unto itself for many reasons.

Opened in 1933 and still owned and operated by the Spence family (5th generation!) it originally started as a livestock auction. In the 1960s they converted the stalls to space where people could sell items, and painted the place the barn red it is still recognized by today.
The Food:
The Amish Farmers Market building is filled with all sorts of treats, both sweet and savory. From made-right-in-front-of-you soft pretzels to an entire meat counter, candy store, hot lunch section, donuts and more, you will have a hard time deciding what to spend your calories on. The seating area is tiny, so if there’s no chair available, eat while you’re wandering or wait ‘til you get to your car.

The Stuff:
Spence’s has an outdoor auction every Tuesday and Friday at 12:30 of all sorts of goods, brought in that day. If you can’t make it then, the flea market is a fun place to dig for vintage finds in between the tube socks and DVDs. There’s a huge selection of vintage records and all sorts of knickknacks and gewgaws. The outdoor vendors start business as soon as the day breaks, so get there early for the best selection.
