There was a time when every town had a theatre, and Middletown Delaware is one of only a handful of towns lucky enough to still have theirs. The Everett Theatre is located in the downtown area, its colorfully lit marquee brightening up the streets on show night just like the good old days.

Everett Theatre Middletown DE Retro Roadmap

Opened in 1922, The Everett is a 500-seat theatre designed for both stage (originally vaudeville) and big screen movie shows. Classically decorated with arches and ornate plasterwork, the Everett had its heyday and then fell on hard times, as did many theatres. Luckily a concerned group of local residents banded together to purchased the theatre in 1983 and restored it to its former glory – and then some.

Today the theatre brings renewed life into this small town, with first run movies (on one of the largest screens in the area), live stage performances and musicals, a children’s series, theatre camps, and more. There’s even a theatre organ that is played for silent films and before live shows.

Even if you’ve never laid eyes on the Everett Theatre in person, it may look familiar to you if you’re a movie buff. 1989’s “Dead Poets Society,” starring Robin Williams, was filmed in and around Middletown, and the Everett makes her big screen debut in a poignant scene in this period coming-of-age film.

In an area that is quickly becoming overgrown with national chains and big box stores, The Everett helps retain the small-town charm in the heart of Delaware.
