My mother was kind enough to leave a message here at my sister’s house, to let me know that the local Chronicle TV show was “Going Retro” tonight, and sis was cool enough to DVR it as I was out with pals.
They covered some of the places that I’ve been this week – Salem Willows, Simpson Springs – great minds think alike!
I was thrilled to see that Irvings Toy and Card Shop is still up and running- the proprietress is 94 years old! She’s like a Mass version of Freda Hirsch in her little market in Phoenixville.
At least this gave mum and dad a better understanding of what I am doing, and that it has some mainstream appeal! Here’s a link to the entire list of places they visited, and it looks like they should be adding the video soon!

July 30, 2009 at 8:31 pmGlad you had a good time in Masachusetts, visiting some of my favorite places! Irving’s is quite unique. Here’s my photo of it on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ethomsen/3146226490/
A lot of history here — according to one article, this is the site of the candy store where the young John F. Kennedy and his brother Joe stole a pair of “Groucho Marx-like false glasses, nose and moustache.”

July 30, 2009 at 9:11 pmThanks for the info about Irvings, I did not know about it’s illustrious past! My fond memory of it is the kind woman who runs the place sold me a weight in the shape of the Life magazine logo. I erroneously thought it was for sale, and she explained it existed to keep the magazines from blowing away, and then charged me a pittance for it. I guess she realized that Life had been out of print for awhile. That weight has a place of honor in each place I’ve lived. After all, it’s Life!
I am charmed by your photos of the cabins in South Hamilton- thanks for sharing!
