Driving on 95 North, I saw something on the side of the road, and it looked like it was moving. I too was moving at 70mph and in a matter of seconds I had to think “OMG what was that I think it was a turtle OH NO he’s going to try and cross the road OH he’ll be smushed I MUST HELP!” and I swung my car onto the side of the road, a good ways down.
I started walking toward him and saw he was taking steps towards the traffic, so I started to run to it, with my pink raincoat flappin all around, screaming “DON’T DO IT!!!!!”.
When I got to it I saw his shell was over a foot long and he had a long tail- it was like a mini dinosaur with armour. Not having picked up a turtle before, I grabbed either side of his shell and hoped he’d hide inside. Instead he started flailing his turtle feet, and those guys have claws, so as I’m holding it away from me running to the side of the woods I’m yelling “CUT THAT OUT!!!!!” and tossed him carefully into the woods. GOSH I hope he stayed there!!!!!
Here’s the view walking back to my car- I much prefer the roadside to not have any animals, alive or dead on it!
Isn’t there a piece in Grapes of Wrath where he talks about a turtle on the road? I’ll have to re-read.
And with that heroic deed under my belt along with the fried clams, I knew it was time for me to leave Massachusetts!
