While on my retro New Jersey research trip I was delighted to round the corner on Route 9 in New Gretna, NJ and happen upon a giant wine bottle on the side of the road.
Built some time between 1920-1930, this giant champagne bottle is just 1 of 80 built between 1920-1930 to promote the Renault Winery located in Egg Harbor, NJ. While many of these 80 bottles were scattered across the country, there are still 4 roadside wine bottles remaining in south Jersey, I read: One near the still operating Renault Winery and the other two in Hammonton and Bayville.
But what about that For Sale sign? A little internet digging reveals that the bottle is a bonus when you buy the property it sits on.
While I’d love to be able to own this piece of roadside memorabilia myself, I think it best belongs where it has been for 80 years and I hope the folks who buy the house appreciate it as much as I do!
