This may not resonate with all of you, but for a certain demographic – the girls who crushed on 60s pop stars – its a sad day, as adorable Englishman Davy Jones of the Monkees has died at the age of 66.
I was too young to catch the Monkees the first time around but when they were shown in reruns in the mid 70s my cousins and I were hooked. Recording the songs off of the TV, making up dances, quoting the shows verbatim, and getting all starry eyed at dreamy Davy.
It’s hard to realize those years are so far behind me, and his death – yes, like the death of Beatle John Lennon, slams the door on the past and reminds us that nothing lasts forever.
So you’ll have to forgive me as modern day Mod Betty consoles her inner fourth grader. At least I can tell her she’ll grow up to marry a cute pop musician of her own.

I was a Mickey Dolenz girl, myself (my best friend had dibs on Davy).
Rest In Peace, Davy. I hope you knew how many smiles you gave the world.

March 1, 2012 at 8:41 amI was a Davy girl from the get-go (what can I say, he was cute, and that accent!!) but later realized I appreciated Mike’s laconic charm as well. My cousin Kim from day one was a Mickey girl, so she totally had dibs on him. Glad to know we weren’t the only ones!
There are certain years that are total visual milestones in my life, and June of 1976 is one of ’em, because that’s when the daughter of a friend of my mother’s just casually asked if I wanted her Monkees records, after I mentioned wanting this 2 record set they were hawking on TV. I almost died! From that moment on those records have been a part of my collection, and life, and even though they’re all grafitti-ed up with silly things (she had scribbled stuff on ’em back in the 60s as well – and I remember finding a love not e from her to Peter in one of ’em) they’re like personal heirlooms in the collection of stuff that means a lot to me. And while I’m a total Beatles fan as well, I’ve always had the knack of also liking the bands that weren’t quite cool enough for the cool kids (see Forigner, Aerosmith, Sex Pistols, Sonic Youth, etc) so it totally makes sense that I love the Monkees, the band everyone loves to mock.
