Though I haven’t been there myself, I wanted to get the Cafe Edison onto the Retro Roadmap Map so folks can make a point to check it out before it sadly closes at the end of 2014.
One of the last authentic places in an increasingly generic Times Square, it is being forced to close to make way for yet another Fancy Restaurant as reported by Jeremiah’s Vanishing New York
Part of the Hotel Edison, which opened in 1931, the cafe is part of what once was the Grand Dining Room. It has been a cafe since 1980 – which to me seems like a minute ago, but in reality is almost 35 years.
Check out these great photos and story of the Cafe here on ScoutingNY.com
And here’s the sad closing of the Cafe as told by Jeremiah’s Vanishing NY
Do yourself a favor and get there before it is gone. Even in the short time that it took me to write up the Blog Post about the Lunch Mob Protest happening on November 8th at the Cafe, I learned that another old NYC business, Smith’s Bar has been shuttered as well.
If this doesn’t stop soon it really WILL be the United States of Generica!
