MSN.com recently posted a list of 15 diners that we should not hit the road without checking out. While not all of them are 100% Retro Roadmap worthy diners, it’s an interesting list. What is most interesting to me is that I’ve only been to 2 of the diners!
Sunny Day Diner – Lincoln, New Hampshire – I have eaten here a couple of times because it is just down the road from the wonderfully retro Indian Head Resort (with little cabin court rooms) that I hope to be able to revisit and feature on Retro Roadmap soon. Sandwiched between this great litte diner and the resort is the throwback Clark’s Trading Post, featuring trained bears and more. If there was ever a trifecta of Retro Roadmap vintage vacation goodness, I think this stretch of Route 3 in New Hampshire definitely is on the top of that list.
Boulevard Diner – Worcester, Massachusetts – I know I’ve eaten at the Boulevard Diner, but I’ll be damned if I can remember anything specific about it. I do know that its late night hours have it on my list of places to swing by again when we’re heading towards my sister’s place, but this past weekend traffic was so ridiculous that we ended up bailing on that idea and eating at a nice but totally renovated diner off the Merritt Parkway. Must remedy this soon.

November 30, 2009 at 9:18 pmI don’t know how you might have missed it, as its very popular, but the Dining Car, Located at 8826 Frankford Ave, Philadelphia 19136 (near exit 32 of I-95 in Pennsylvania..not to be confused with I-95 in New Jersey) is at times, gourmet quality. Its been featured on Food Channel and its open 24/7. Plenty of free parking with new Electric Trackless trolleys running past on Frankford ave (also 24/7). A real joy for anyone wanting good food and into anything retro..which Philly has in abundance!

December 1, 2009 at 12:09 amHello Ron- Funny you should bring the dining car to my attention, we used to get our cars fixed at a shop just up the street from there, and ate there once. That was years ago, so thanks for reminding me about this place! I took a look at their website and it seems as if they’re famous for their chicken croquettes which are a guilty local pleasure of mine. While Retro Roadhusband and I have lived in Pennsylvania for almost 5 years we’re still learning about all of the cool places around us, so thanks for the suggestion and please keep ’em coming!

November 30, 2009 at 10:53 pmI’ve not been to any of them! Back when I lived in CA, I used to love the Habor House in Sunset Beach–which has been open 24/7 since 1939. Or Canters in LA which has been open 24/7 since 1931: apparently they don’t even have a key to lock the front door!
I guess I need to find a good, old fashioned diner round these parts now!

December 1, 2009 at 12:11 amRichard- Thanks for the reminder of Canters- I met Retro Roadhusband out in Hollywood and remember eating there a couple of late nights with him and a big gang of folks. What a great place, and very fond memories! Hopefully we’ll get out there again and I can snap some photos – or some kind California soul will submit some for the Retro Roadmap. Where do you and Mrs. Bewildered reside now? I may be able to direct you to some good old fashioned diners!
