While reading the virtual Sunday Paper this morning I noticed my old broadsheet the Boston “Glob” had a swell article on something near and dear to my Retro Roadmap heart – diners – of the Worcester Lunch Car variety!
The 10 Worcester Lunch Car diners (not necessarily in Worcester, just built there by this famous diner company) are definitely worthy of adding to the Retro Roadmap -if they weren’t already placed there by our pal and Diner Hotline pal and good guy Larry Cultrera in his Top 10 Massachusetts Diners post.
I’ve just started going through the Retro Roadmap archives today, so this is a perfect project to give me an excuse to look at old photographs, how handy 🙂
Without further ado I share with you The Boston Globe’s Ten Diners Stamped Worcester!

April 25, 2011 at 6:24 pmI am sorry to not see “The Formally named” East Side Diner now named Carmen”s Diner at 135 lunenburg street, fitchburg mass. I recently purchased the entire building/real-estate and have been learning alot about the history of this diner and what I have discovered so far is…
1. The circulation of this diner car is around 1924 .
2. The original cast iron railroad wheels are still on this diner car .
3. This is a true historical site/landmark of fitchburg .
4. Many owners have served food at his diner since 1924 .
5. I want more than anything to make this establishment alive again .
6. Customers since my opening on 12/29/11 have been saying about “how clean the diner is” and “how non-greasy” the food products are.
7. Patrons love my home-made hash which takes 8/9 hrs to make but I love the fact people enjoy it.
If ther is some way to add this diner, it would be greatly appreciated because the history of this diner goes waaaay back in time and its a shame that it is not listed.
Thank you,
Carmen
