Just got the sad news from Brian Butko’s Lincoln Highway News blog that the Hi Way Drive In Theatre in Latrobe PA is going to be demolished and replaced by a CVS. So sad!
While we should lament the closing of this classic Lincoln Highway movie theater (and replacement by a ubiquitous chain store) I think this is a perfect kick-in-the-pants reminder to all of us to go out and support our local drive-ins this summer! If they remain profitable and popular it is less likely that they’d feel the need to close, and this is how regular folks like you and I can help them stay open.
RetroRoadhusband and I have plans to visit Becky’s Drive In in Walnutport PA soon, and as you know we’re supporters of Shankweiler’s Drive In in Orefield, PA.
If you want to know what Drive In is near YOU – Drive-ins.com is my favorite resource to find out what drive in movie theatres are open across the country. Check to see what’s closest to you and then make plans for some summer fun under the stars! It’s the best way to show these folks that you care that their business remains open.

June 11, 2011 at 2:08 pmAll our local Drive ins have been closed. We were hopeful that the one in Middlehope NY was suppose to be opened again, but it never did. I did rent a dvd from the library all about the American Drive in it even had the cool little foodie comercials. Ahhh the good old days!!

June 11, 2011 at 5:11 pmJeannette- that’s such a bummer! Our “local” drive ins are well over an hour away but we’re trying to get there at least once each this season. We found one on our vacation in the Lake George NY area, perhaps you’ll discover a hidden treasure like we did!

We no longer have a drive-in near us. The last one closed several years ago. We loaded up the dogs and went one last time. Popcorn never tasted so good!
