I’m a gal of lists, so I thought I’d share with you some of the things on my “It isn’t summer until we do this” list. Please share what’s on YOUR summer list in the comments!
In no particular order:
See a movie at The Drive In:
Drive-Ins.com is your source when you’re wondering “Where is the Drive In Near Me?”
(I’ve mentioned before that I’m really concerned about how the transition away from 35mm film to digital projecting is going to affect these independently owned mom & pop businesses, as so many of them are only open seasonally. In a perfect world we wouldn’t see any of them close because of this, but with it being reported that the conversion costs around $100,000 I’m really afraid that next summer their numbers will have sharply declined. So get there while you can – and put your money in their pocket so they can afford to make the switch!)
Eat at a Seafood Shack!
Since this is my list, and I’m a New England gal, this means fried clams with bellies, and on my birthday,if I’m lucky, a lobster! and nothing fancy, please – a cardboard box and a picnic table are all I need.
Get Burgers and Hot Dogs!
Take your pick, or eat both – perfect summertime foods!
Road Trip to Someplace You’ve Never Been:
Do you know why I decided why we should go to Asbury Park, NJ last weekend? Because we hadn’t been there before! We had a great time – it’s fun to “splore!”
Get Ice Cream!!
Ice cream in the summer always hits…”The Spot!”
Ride on a Vintage Carousel:
You’re never too old to try and get the brass ring!
Visit a Wacky Roadside Attraction:
First you’ll see this,
Then the next thing you know you’re doing THIS!
Play Some Classic Arcade Games:
You can have your video games, give me classic pinball or skeeball anyday!
Play Miniature Golf:
The sport of miniature kings.
Get Car Hop or Curb Service!
Nothing says summer to me more than eating a meal in the Retro Roadmobile with the food and drinks perched precariously on a tray hooked to the window. Bonus points if there’s icy root beer in a frosted glass mug!
Visit a Regional Fair:
We had a great time at the Kutztown Folk Fest last year!
Go to a Vintage Amusement Park!
We took the Retro Roadfam to Knoebels and they LOVED IT!
Go To The Beach:
Or Just Hang Out on The Patio:
It’s all good!

July 16, 2012 at 9:41 amOur unknown are all the estate sales with in less of a mile from our new to us mid-century home. We have been filling it with items from all around our neighborhood and that aspect means so much to us.
This weekend a day trip to a once a month flea market!!!!!!

For me it’s enjoying a campfire in our backyard firepit making s’mores with the kids, biking along the Lehigh River and then rafting there too.
I was just at Circus Drive-In last weekend, too! I’ve eaten many a meal there when I rented in Belmar many summers ago. Now we take the kids and they love it especially the huge hot dog!!!!! You should try Hot Dog Johnny’s in Buttzville, NJ.

Retro Roadhusband was surprised at the size of the hot dog but loved it as much as your kids must’ve. And speaking of kids, I can’t help but snicker when I see a place called Buttzville, NJ. OMG I just looked it up on the internets and it looks fab! We’ve got to make a visit!

I know, Buttzville always makes me laugh! The hot dogs at Hot Dog Johnny’s are an acquired taste but the fries and the neon atmosphere make it worth a try.

July 17, 2012 at 12:54 amI feel like such a good, little roadmapper; I have already done almost everything on this awesome list this summer. The only things I haven’t done are the vintage amusement park (on the books for the end of the summer) and eat at a seafood shack (which is actually never going to happen at any time of the year). I eat like a non-New England 6-year-old – bring on the burgers and dogs!!!

And I’m just about to introduce an up-and-coming 11 year old who is into Fashion to it too, she’s suddenly realized I’m cool b/c I collect vintage clothing 🙂

July 17, 2012 at 6:17 pmI have already done twos things on my summer list……loaded up the kid in the RV and headed north to MA and met IN PERSON a Flickr Friend of 3 years and then spent a few days in NH and then high tailed it over to Niagara Falls for a few days.
I want to go on a relaxing ride down the river in a tube (hopefully in a few weeks)
Go fishing and crabbing …….went fishing last Friday!
Go to the boardwalk…..doesnt matter which beach.
Hit some good flea markets!
This weekend we are going to Boonsboro MD to the caverns and spend the day exploring the town and on Saturday morning, go to the Harpers Ferry Fleamarket to find some treasures
