Retro Roadmap TV Show? Here’s Mod Betty’s First Attempt!

Many people have said to me that Retro Roadmap would make an excellent TV show, but it’s taken Mod Betty a few years to get her courage up to put herself in front of one of them moving-picture type cameras.( Heck, it’s only with the encouragement of Charles Phoenix that I started putting myself in more of my post photos, and since there wasn’t a total recoil in horror I thought, why not try the TV?)

So when our awesome pal Rob from Bystander Productions (who did a great job on Retro Roadhusband’s music video) was interested and available, I thought, why not put together a pretend version of what I would want a Retro Roadmap TV show to be like. My fab pal Tim P. Credle was game enough to accompany me, on a fab vintage bike tour of Rehoboth Beach, with stops at some of our fave places.

You can see the results below!

While I’m full of  lessons learned from this self-invented project (stand up straight, write a script, wear lipstick, allocate more time than you think you need, confirm that folks are available for interviews, etc. etc.) the main lesson I learned was that it was actually wicked fun, and I look forward to shooting the next episode!

P.S. – how could I neglect to mention that the music for this was done by my very own Retro Roadhusband aka Cliff Hillis. It’s a family affair…!

Thanks DJS! If it takes me getting in front of the camera to get more folks to realize what cool vintage places (and signs) are out there, I’ll do it!

Aw, thanks! I have wanted to try it for a while now, and the stars aligned when I found someone with the camera skills!

Speaking as someone who spent 15 years in broadcast TV, I gotta say that was really professionally produced. I can relate to the trepidation to step in front of the camera; this comes from someone who has two sets of his own sign-hunting video footage that’s been taking up space in his computer for the past year!

Thanks for the kind words! I’ve passed them on to my pal who did the editing. Knowing what an important part of the process that is, I knew I couldn’t handle it myself, and when Bystander Rob did such an awesome job on Cliff’s vid, I knew we had an ace in the hole! Would love to see your footage!

Do you know Jimmy Rosen from the Old Sledworks in Duncannon PA? He’s a swell guy and has a “Pennsylvania Pickers” program he’s working on. I bet you and he would have a lot of sign stories to share! http://papicks.com/watch.html

Oh, that was such fun‚Äîloved it! And it really did look very professional. I used to work in film production for an ad agency in Detroit; y’all did a very good job!

Those bikes were beautiful‚Äîthey make me want to spiff mine up (it’s been hanging in the garage since we moved here). And your little tour of the area was really a treat to see. I look forward to more episodes!

Wow this is great! Did you happen to visit the walls apartments when you were at rehoboth?

Thanks LI – we rode our bikes past Walls’ but didn’t stop there. Many years ago we had a lovely chat with the woman who ran the place when we were looking for places to recommend for folks to stay on our wedding weekend, as we got married in Rehoboth. Unfortunately we didn’t think some of our guests would see the rustic charm of a place like Walls, but I’m glad we tried!
