There are plenty of places along Wildwood’s boardwalk to satisfy your sweet tooth, but if you want one that has an extra helping of authentic vintage charm, then Mod Betty kindly directs you to her fave: Douglass Fudge.
Located at the intersection of Wildwood Ave and The Boardwalk, Douglass Fudge has been a family owned and operated candy store since 1919. Now run by the 3rd generation, they’re famous not only for their fudge but their original recipe salt water taffy. As it says on the sign in the window “We make the candy we sell” and they make 90% of it right here, fresh daily in their kitchen adjacent to the shop.
As promised, entering the candy shop gives you that stepped back in time feeling, thanks to the winning combination of warm knotty pine paneling, antique glass candy jars filled with colorful confections, and bespoke carpeting.
There’s plenty to choose from here - from hand dipped chocolates of all sorts and fresh strawberries dunked in chocolate right in the front window. Their “World Famous” molasses paddles are a regional beach treat, and if you want a smaller taste they offer molasses paddle “dainties”. They also make homemade caramel corn, and offer sugar free candy options for those must abstain from the sweet stuff.
Once you narrow down your selection and fill a box, you’ll be tickled to see that it is topped off with a cheery tartan pattern lid with a Scotty dog mascot. What a sweet little place, huh?
Mod Betty Says:
Open seasonally starting in May - call ahead before you visit to be sure they’re open
I almost forgot - they’ve got macaroons too! Another Jersey Shore sweet treat
Since you’re on the boardwalk, WATCH THE TRAM CAR, PLEASE! :-)
