Opened in the early 1900s and for decades known as the Astor, the Allen Theatre in Annville PA is a great little spot for a movie or a bite! I pulled over as soon as I saw their neon marquee lit up.
While I could not stay to watch a first run movie on their single screen I was able to get a hot beverage at the adjacent and connected Backstage Cafe!
Not only is it a cafe space in its own right, i also serves as the concession stand for the theater itself. In fact, you can bring any of the food you purchase there (think sandwiches, wraps, coffee, ice cream and obvs popcorn) into the auditorium with you.
After the Astor closed and the space renovated by Skip and Martha Hicks, it was renamed the Allen Theatre and reopened in 1995 and since 2018 has been owned by Sue and Ed Felty.
In addition to movies they also have live entertainment on the stage.
Now wouldn't you rather go to a cute little place like this, than some big boring box of a place? Of course you would, you're a Retro Roadmapper!
