There’s no sign on the front of the building, so only my curiosity about the items in the window made me open the door to Brier Rose Books. I’m so glad I did, and you will be too, if you’re a reader of any kind. And of course you are - you’re a Retro Roadmapper!
The evocative fragrance of old books greets you as you enter and gaze at the shelves, stocked floor to ceiling, just interrupted occasionally by a painting, deer head or sculpture. Well organized into categories to include just about every topic, the procuring, pricing and organizing is done by bibliophile owner Howard Rose. While he opened the shop only about 20 years ago, the history that oozes from all of the books and surroundings definitely makes you feel like you’ve stepped into the past.
When you finally make it to the middle of the store, an oasis opens up. A comfy couch awaits a closer book browse, and a pair of directors chairs are prepped for a congenial chess game. If you look closely behind the piled up books, behind the glass case filled with interesting odds and bobs, you may find Howard himself.
Howard will happily point you in the general direction of your category, but the best part about Brier Rose is the browsing and exploring on your own! Earmark a goodly amount of your day to get lost amongst the stacks, and transport yourself to any world you choose, courtesy of the written word.
Don’t forget to note who the employee of the month is - his photo is posted at the entrance :-)
My dad would’ve loved this place, and the ruffed grouse that got me to go inside!
