Mod Betty has a bit of a drinking problem - because she’s got a total crush on Oprandy’s Liquor Store! I can’t decide if it is the glorious neon signage, or the stepped-back-in-time interior, or the sweet owners, or their pet turtles. Oh heck, it is all of it!
Opened over 70 years ago, this independent liquor/beer/wine store has been owned by the Kim family for almost 30 years. They’ve kept the shop and fabulous neon sign in great shape. I almost lost my mind (there’s video footage on the interwebs) when I unexpectedly saw the neon as it was being lit up, and my goodness, that sign should be declared a historic landmark.
The dark wood paneling and yellow signs are definitely from another era, but probably the most distinctive feature that awaits you is the terrarium - complete with working water wheel and pair of real live turtles dozing or swimming. Mr. Kim estimates the turtle are about 15 years old.
Speaking of these sweet owners, Mrs. Kim plants annuals and vegetables in the raised planter that runs the front length of the store. She admits one year she planted too many cherry tomatoes and was giving them away to everyone, so now she’s cut back, but just a little.
Even if you’re a teetotaller and not a tippler you can pick up a soda, some chips, lottery ticket or a hostess gift here, and give a hearty Thank You to the Kims for keeping this place aglow.
Take a peek under the awning leading to the 2nd floor - Oprandy strikes again!
Closed on Sundays - even the turtles need a rest ;-)
