Peter C aka - Road_maveN has added a PERFECT Retro Roadmap destination to our collection - Wigwam Village #6 in Holbrook AZ - right on Route 66!
Wigwam Motels, or Wigwam Villages are part of a now-defunct motel chain where the rooms are built to resemble Native American teepees. If you ever saw the Disney movie Cars, you may also recognize them as the inspiration for the Cozy Cone Motel!
Peter writes:
7Wigwam Villageswere constructed between 1933 to 1949 but just three remain:
Here is Candi and the Wigwam Motel on Historic Route 66 in Holbrook, AZ:
The night we stayed in WigWam #5. We went down the street for dinner to the Butterfield Stage Steakhouse. They had a musician doing a sing a long and naturally, Candi requested the Bobby Troupe song, "Get Your Kicks on Route 66" . How cool was that, singing, "Get Your Kicks on Route 66" ON ROUTE 66!!!
Why would I recommend it? Are you kidding? This was one of the coolest Retro Route 66 things one can do in a lifetime.
Sing along with me now, won't you?
Get your kicks on Route 66
Well if you ever plan to motor west
Travel my way, take the highway that's the best Get your kicks on Route 66
Well it winds from Chicago to LA More than two thousands miles all the way Get your kicks on Route 66
Well it goes to St. Louis Down to Missouri Oklahoma City looks oh so pretty
You'll see Amarillo Gallup, New Mexico Flagstaff, Arizona Don't forget Wynonna Kingman, Barstow, San Bernardino
Won't you get hip to this kindly tip And go take that California trip Get your kicks on Route 66
Get your kicks on Route 66
(Or if you don't like to sing, THIS is one of Mod Betty's favorite instrumentals of all time)
I’ve stayed in both the #6 & #7 and can’t wait until the day I can make it to Cave City! San Bernardino definitely has its positives including a pool and cool ownership; I think Holbrook (no pool) edges out its California competition by retaining the original paint scheme and much of the original furnishings. Both are fun and surprisingly roomy!
We feel lucky enough to have stayed in Cave City, but definitely have Holbrook & San Bernardino on our list! Mr. Tiny, if you have a photo or two from your stay at the Cali one I’d love to be able to add it to Retro Roadmap – I totally trust your reviews!
