Please welcome long-time Retro Roadmap Reader and pal Louis Inghilterra to the Retro Roadmap Stable of Stars! Having just returned from a birthday visit to L.A. he's back with a welcomed addition to Retro Roadmap - that classic burger joint The Apple Pan!
The Apple Pan, Los Angeles CA - "Quality Forever"
by Louis Inghilterra
The Apple Pan is the best as classic vintage West Coast burger joints get!
Established in 1947, The Apple Pan is housed in small colonial farm-style building, with a U-shaped counter surrounded by 26 stools – that’s it - no booths or tables. In the center of the counter is the Apple Pan’s kitchen with the smells of juicy burgers spreading around the room by vintage fans.
The two legendary burgers on the menu are the Hickory and the Steakburger, which family recipes have been handed down since 1881. And the burgers are still wrapped in paper.
The Hickory burger (shown above) features a red tangy hickory sauce. (and no that’s not Ketchup smothered in between the burger)
In contrast to the Hickory Burger, The Steakburger features a relish sauce that give the burger a more sweet taste.
The Apple Pan also serves its soft drinks in paper cups with vintage metallic holders.
And what goes better with a burger than a fresh homemade slice of pie topped with homemade icecream! The Apple Pan features two delectable homemade pies; Apple and Banana Cream!
Mod Betty adds - if some of this looks familiar to you even though you’ve never been here, the Apple Pan was actually the inspiration for the retro-themed chain Johnny Rockets. But this is SO Much Better, because it’s Authentic Vintage. So remember to go there next time you’re in L.A. and hankering for a classic burger and a slice o’ pie! :-)
