So glad that this honestly sincere shop is still open. I swoon!
Original 2011 Post:
Nothing beats a classic ice cream parlor on a hot summer day, and the citizens of Cincinnati have been lucky enough to cool their heels and their tastebuds at Aglamesis Brothers Ice Cream and Candy since 1908.
We were lucky enough to be escorted to the soda fountain / candy store by our gracious Cincy tourguide, Tod Swormsteadt of the American Sign Museum (located just a few miles down the road.)
Though the company was founded in 1908, there are two locations of Aglamesis Brothers in Cincinnati. We were glad to be directed towards the Oakley Square location, built in 1913. Things have changed little in the almost hundred years the soda fountain has been open, which is pretty cool.
I loved the long counter made from imported marble, stained glass lamps, heart shaped wire-backed ice cream parlor chairs and vintage tile floor. Each of these well kept pieces of history shows the pride that the Aglamesis family takes in their business, and this includes their homemade ice cream and chocolates.
One word that intrigued me on our menu was "Sincere" (and since I'm a Bye Bye Birdie fan, I could not help but get this song running through my head as soon as I read it, but I digress.)
According to the Aglamesis Brothers website:
"We make our products “The Sincere Way”, in small batches overseen by master confectioners. We use only pure cane sugar, fresh cream, vanilla extract and other superior ingredients that have stood the test of nearly a century of consumer scrutiny."
And our ice creams were sincerely delicious! The complimentary plate of vanilla cookies is a nice touch, as was eating our treats surrounded by the homemade chocolates they're also famous for.
See those little chocolate sprinkles on my sundae? We call them jimmies up in Mass where I'm from, and I loved that Aglamesis Brothers called them that as well.
Actually Jimmy Sprills sounds like an old time gangster name doesn't it? Fits in perfectly with the authentic old feel of this well preserved ice cream parlor.
So I’m sitting here on a 96 degree day when a post arrives that begins “Nothing beats a classic ice cream parlor on a hot summer day…” then proceeds to remind me of one of the many benefits of living in Cincinnati. I held out for a little while but was on my way to Aglamesis’ within the hour. I didn’t make it to Oakley but to the “new” (1970) store in Montgomery which is only about five miles away. Good call there, Betty. The peach ice cream was delicious.
Wheee! This type of comment is exactly why I do Retro Roadmap! So glad I reminded you of the cool old places around you AND you went there! Now I want an ice cream too 🙂
