It’s a win-win when an eye-catching vintage sign is attached to a business you can still visit - which is why Mod Betty is happy to introduce you to Anthony’s Pizza Town. While it is on the “younger” side of Retro Roadmap’s timeline - having opened in 1977, the restaurant is a step back into that colorful era.
While he insists that is not him with the ‘stache on the big bright sign out front, you’ll know Anthony as soon as you walk in. On my first visit it was hard to concentrate on what to order at the counnter as I was too busy taking in the vintage 70’s “Italian Cantina” decor. Orange tile walls, decorative wallpaper, and a fabulous Schlitz ceiling fixture. And as Mojo Nixon once wisely said “Elvis is everywhere.” Anthony is a big fan of The King, and it shows - on the walls and often on the stereo and TVs.
From the menu you have your choice of Sicilian or round pizza, calzones, salads and subs - hot or cold/ I was tickled to learn that since we’re near Trenton, “pencil points” are on the pasta menu. Anthony was patient enough with me to explain that regionalism for penne - pen/penne/pencil! Slices are available as is beer and wine, and look for spaghetti and tomato pie specials.
While this area is changing rapidly, Anthony firmly states he has no intention of closing any time soon, or remodeling - just keeping the place clean. That’s the perfect recipe in my book.
Anthony’s is easy to get to off of the NJTPK x7 or 295, so make it a regular detour
Be a good Retro Roadmapper and pay cash, tho you can use cards if over $15
While in the area go visit The Record Collector in quaint downtown Bordentown - we love ‘em!
