A landmark in downtown Englewood since 1944 you might be surprised at what you find below the still lit neon sign at Baumgart’s.
While it looks like a classic soda fountain both inside and out, there’s a modern spin on this delightful Art Deco space, as it is known for their homemade ice cream...and Asian cuisine! Don’t worry if that’s not your fave food, as they have some classic diner-type offerings on the lunch menu as well, so go ahead inside.
This beautiful space has been an Asian restaurant since 1988, when they were wise to preserve many of the existing vintage elements that give this place a throwback feel. The counter - where you can get sushi OR homemade ice cream - is marble, the spinning stools are upholstered with a two-tone pie shaped detail, and the terrazzo floors gleam.
I was especially smitten with the design of the round “service station” separating the lunch counter from the elegant dining room, with hidden drawers accessible from any side.
There’s a stepped back in time feel next door too, as what once was the men’s clothing store The University Room is now Baumgart’s dining room/party area. The oval shape and large booths give a swanky vibe to the space. Mod Betty’s patron saint Phyllis Diller figures prominently in a number of classic movie posters - always a good sign. So whether you’re part of the sushi squad or the diner brigade a visit to Baumgart’s is bound to appeal.
