Mod B is a huge fan of vintage travel souvenirs and ephemera, so when she got a hot tip on a breakfast spot that was laden with them she made sure this was her first proper stop in Portland, Oregon. (Retro Roadmap Roadtrip Travel Tip "Ask Locals" in action! Thanks Solanah from Vixen Vintage for sharing your Portland insider skinny with Mod Betty!)
A popular spot serving breakfast and lunch only, there was a wee bit of a wait when we first arrived, but we learned quickly the Portland way of signing in on the clipboard hanging just inside the door.
While the place was bustling inside, we were quickly seated at the counter, asked about beverages (gent next to us was served a righteous looking Bloody Mary) and told the specials, which sounded delish.
After placing our order I took the opportunity to gawk at all of the vintage travel ephemera and souvenirs that adorned most every surface:
Breakfast was delish as I'm sure is obvious from the photo below. This is Retro Roadhusband's tasty and healthy looking breakfast - not shown, my eggs, bacon and blue corn griddlecake with pecan butter (nom!)
On our way out I spied a vintage Oregon souvenir glass like one I hoped to find on my journeys - nothing beats finding a vintage souvenir, as a souvenir :-) (Alas the souvenirs are not for sale at the cafe, but that just means everyone gets to enjoy them!)
So while the cafe has only been open since 1999, their love of vintage travel, counter service and tasty food make 'em a Retro Roadmap Recommendation.
And bonus? They're right across the street from Trader Vic's!
While they're a chain - if you're a tiki completist this is a handy place for a happy hour drink and some tasty apps.
And photo ops, especially if you're feeling as full as the tiki god outside after a good meal at the Byway! :-)
