It must be Mod Betty's New England roots, but when I see baked beans on the breakfast menu, I know I'm "home". Cindy's Diner in North Scituate Rhode Island makes it onto Retro Roadmap for not only their great neon sign, but also for their aforementioned baked beans at breakfast.
Technically speaking, Cindy's is not a diner type:building but a diner type: restaurant. And when you walk in, the place has been all "Fiftiesed Up". I could have let both of those reasons make me pass by. But it was a freezing rainy day, and I had noticed so many of the places I had photographed on this stretch of Route 6 years ago had all but disappeared, so I was feeling kinda glum.
So I was heartened to see that Cindy's uncharacteristically large and sassy neon sign, was still lit up after all those years, even if she had been visited by the ghost of Elvis past.
A mini pot of hot tea served on vintage diner china (or as it is pronounced in my head, "dinah chinah") and some beans on toast served by a friendly waitress, and I felt a little bit more restored and ready to head back to my new homestate of Pennsylvania.
I knew I would not have gotten that same warmth from the chain fast food place across the street, and was glad to know that Cindy's was still here.
OOOO, love retro diners. Definitely beats fast food restaurants anyday. And love that neon sign! I spend the summer in the Boston area, so I’ll have to take the short hop down to RI and check out Cindys!.
