One of the reasons Mod Betty loves a road trip so much is that she can pull over and buy something heavy and bulky at a place like Harper's Statuary - and not have to worry about lifting it over her head and jamming it into the overhead bin of a plane! Though Harper's has existed since 1962, we did not know of it until we wisely pulled off of the highway and onto Route 11 in Harrisonburg, VA. As soon as I spied that yard teeming with all sorts of colorful assorted concrete lawn ornaments we U-turned the car - the girl can't help it! As we toured the yard we found all sorts of tempting treasures for our yard but my favorites were the "old mold" kind that you might see at your grandma's house: Donkeys pulling carts, proud standing deer, birdbaths, gazing balls and more (alas no vintage flamingos, but I found a source later - stay tuned!)
Made on-site, you can get your cast-stone statuary (as they call it in the biz) unfinished or detail painted.
Because Retro Roadhusband lives in fear that I'm "grannying the place up" every time I want to add just a little something to our outdoor decor, I was not able to get the 5-tier birdbath with seahorse base. Yet!
Though not from a vintage mold the Easter Island head we agreed upon fits right in with our tiki theme that we like so much.
If you want to get an idea of what Harper's carries without leaving the comfort of your couch, their website product catalog shows a lot of their items and current prices. But nothing beats seeing it in person, so if you're in the area, stop on by - it's so fun to look!
I can guarantee that what they have in their online catalog is only a fraction of what they actually carry. I would give them a call, the folks we met with were really nice! I’m sure they would be happy to hook you up with a towering feline 🙂
Route 11 in Virginia is great. Lots to see and do including Foamhenge (better than the original, in my point of view). Get off the interstates and take the major US highways and enjoy motoring the way it’s supposed to be.
Agreed! I have foamhenge coming up in a future post. Too cool not to share, even if it isn’t 100% “vintage” – but it’s my website so I can do whatever I want 🙂

February 24, 2016 at 12:51 pmOh MB, you are going to cost me some money. I saw that giant cat years ago and have been haunted by it. Now I have a source. Thanks!

February 24, 2016 at 1:24 pmI will. Just went through the online catalog, and the giant cat you are standing beside does not seem to be listed(?)
