Another Vacationland Retro Roadmap postcard from Louis "Sam" I.
The Fat Boy Drive-In Restaurant-nestled in the pine trees of mid-state Maine, and is the Bob's Big Boy of the East Coast! (oooh, don't start any rivalries, Louis! Maybe say it's the Bob's Big Boy of Brunswick Maine :-))
Started in 1955 by 2 Navy chiefs from the near by naval academy who had seen drive-ins on the west coast, they wanted to bring it back to their home on the east coast.
The Fat Boy is open March thru October and is staple among local Mainers who come from miles around for their delicious lobster rolls, "Royal Burgers" or Frappes (the New England term for milkshake).
The Fat Boy still offers car hop service under their vintage canopy complete with a green and white fiberglass roof which ads to the ambience of this classic Maine eatery.
I had a pulled pork sandwich which was tangy and delicious, while my mom went with the Lobster Roll which she rated an A+.
Here's a super cool ad from when the joint first opened on July 29, 1955
So if you headed up the Maine Coast be sure to check the Fat Boy Drive-In for a true slice of Maine's roadside history!
