The great thing about researching for Retro Roadmap is discovering places that I did not even know existed - even when they’ve been around almost 90 years!
That is the case with M. Fierro & Sons Cheese factory on North Union Street. They’ve been making a variety of rich and creamy cheeses in Wilmington’s Little Italy since 1928. Famous for their Italian-style cheeses manufactured on-site, they also offer imported Italian delicacies and seasonal specialties.
I’d say you can’t miss their store, but I did the first time around, even though it was hiding in plain sight. Be on the lookout for the colorful painted mural on the right as soon as you turn onto one-way North Union Street. There’s a small parking lot, or you can pull up and take advantage of the 15-minute street parking out front.
The shop is just a small space at the factory front, so ring the bell to be let in (It is a manufacturing facility don’t forget, not some fake factory outlet.) Then step inside to have your pick of cheese from the dairy cases along with imported Italian oils, vinegars and pasta.
In 2007 they joined with another local family-owned and operated business, Hy-Point Dairy - one of only 2 small dairies left in the state (the other being Lewes Dairy in Sussex County.)
Remember if you want to buy local, it’s a good idea to keep a cooler in your car so you can stop by Fierro’s for some delicious cheese to take home with you!
