I am so un-handy yet I love old hardware stores and Finkle’s Hardware is a prime example of my fave kind. Family owned and operated for over 100 years, it has a fab neon sign, bills itself as the World’s Most Unusual Supply House, and is located in an adorable and walkable riverside town.
Started by Russian immigrant Joe Finkle (whose name is still emblazoned on the storefront) the business today is run by his granddaughter Rachel and her family. Much like family, there are a number of employees who have been here for decades, so the collective knowledge of hardware, lighting, electrical and house supplies within these historic walls is unparalleled.
Despite its initial appearance, Finkles is bigger than it seems, so they’re almost guaranteed to have anything you’re looking for in one of their four buildings. Across from their narrow storefront, Retro Roadmappers will want to note the Strand Theater building across the street, which is used as Finkle’s plumbing warehouse.
Whether you’re looking for a hard to find piece for your home or business or a few nails or screws to complete a project, Finkle’s is your place. Even if you don’t know the name for what you’re looking for, describe it and they can definitely help - trust me. And while they may close at 5pm every day, don’t forget to stop by at dusk to check out their neon sign aglow!
Painted Portraits of Joe and Abe (Rachel’s father) are displayed behind the busy counter
Speaking of painting check out the Ghost Sign on the wall across the street
Closed Sundays and at 3 on Saturdays, so plan your visit accordingly
