Just when you think there are no Retro Roadmap-worthy places in Hunterdon County, the barn shaped Fudge Shoppe appears before your eyes on busy Route 202 like an oasis rising up from the roadside.
Opened in 1961 and still run by the Burry family this cheery red shop is an easy fit for Retro Roadmap in all of the standard ways: Well kept and well loved, stepped back in time feeling, even free samples of chocolate at the counter. BUT the thing that shoots the Fudge Shoppe to the top of Mod Betty’s list is the fact that it is the only place that she has discovered Penuche “fudge” in the tri-state area!
A New England staple and the favorite candy of both Mod Betty and her 101-year old grandmother, Penuchi (as they spell it here) is pronounced Pen-OOH-Chee. Made with milk, butter, and a little vanilla like most fudge, the difference here is the use of brown sugar instead of white. This cooks up into a deliciously sweet, slightly carmel taste that just can’t be beat. Ask for a sample and you’ll be a convert.
Of course there are chocolates and candies galore in this wood paneled shop, and they make most of their delectable treats in their second floor kitchen. Fudge, chocolate covered creams and caramels, homemade marshmallows and truffles, they’re also known for their chocolate covered fresh fruits in season. They’ve also got dairy / gluten free items, and “pectin based treats” so there’s something here for all.
Open at 8am-8pm every day (6pm Saturday) but closed on Sundays
Bad karma to get a free sample and not buy something, warns Mod Betty
