Don’t worry Retro Roadmappers, Mod Betty wouldn’t force you to be healthy, but at Haars Health Food that certainly is an option.
Open since 1934, this unusual and fun shop is easily spotted on the side of busy Delsea Drive (sandwiched between Stewart’s Drive-In and the Delsea Drive In Theatre). Their bright yellow sign also indicates that they carry Imported and Gourmet Goods, so I encourage you to make your way in and explore.
Still owned and operated by the Haar family (fourth generation!) this independent shop is a feast for the senses. Of course a large percentage of the store is given over to items to improve your health, home and beauty the natural way, but my favorite reason to stop by is because of the foods they carry.
I could spend days poring over their imported candies, ogling the wrappers and choosing chocolates from across the miles. A friend proclaims his love of tinned fish, and he’s got quite a selection to choose from. Fresh ground nut butters are made in-house by - grinding the nuts. How simple is that?
If you want something heartier than a snack, head towards the back where you’ll find the delicatessen (as promised on colorful sign outside). They are known for their German cold cuts, breads and cheeses, but don’t worry if you’re not that adventurous, American cold cuts are available too.
Remember to stop by at the holidays for unique and tasty treats you won’t easily find anywhere else.
Mod Betty Says: Note the skill used on the hand painted signs throughout the store and above the deli - gorgeous! Keep your cooler in the car - they’ve got both a refrigerated and frozen section If you’re a coffee achiever, they’ve got beans a plenty just waiting to be ground
