It was a happy coinkidink that our first stop in Austin TX was just steps away from Hut's Hamburgers on 6th street - and bonus points for it being 2 for 1 burger Wednesday when it was time for us to eat between shows!
As you can imagine Austin was pretty hopping during our SXSW visit and Hut's was no exception. But folks were friendly, we found a place to sit and wait while our number was called, and that gave me time to peruse the layers of history, awards and funky finds lining the walls.
(they are on a busy city street now, so no longer in need of the steer head car hop!)
According to a sign on the wall, the building was built in 1939 and originally a Drive-In restaurant called Sammy's, and went through various renames and restaurant styles before it was named Hut's in 1969. Don't worry, there won't be a quiz! But one thing this tells you is that, in the quickly metropolizing city of Austin, Hut's is one of the few vestiges of what old Austin was like.
Soon enough our number was called and we walked through the busy dining area towards our table in the back under the big Dag Burger sign. The Dag Burger is their famous double meat cheeseburger.
I let RetroRoadhusband follow the waitress so I could lag behind and take a photo of this cool old jukebox - I've never seen this version before. Anyone else?
When we sat down (and ordered beers - cool!) and started looking at the menu we were surprised to see that yes, seriously, because it was Wednesday between 6pm-10pm we would be getting one of our beef burgers free! I mention the beef bit because they also offer buffalo, veggie and chicken burgers, but those aren't included in the special. We're pretty simple in our tastes for burgers and though there were lots of interesting combos on the menu, both RRH and I ordered the same thing - The All American Buddy Holly Burger:
(I mean we were in Buddy's home state of Texas AND there to see Rock and Roll - so there you go!)
This was one of those times when I was so hungry for my food I completely forgot to take a photo of my burger - but it was totally delicious and I'd go there, and order it again in a heartbeat. The fries were "wicked tasty" as well.
And if I don't stop writing about our tasty meal at Hut's now, I'll be heading out the door to grab a burger - like I did yesterday when editing these photos!
So do yourself a favor - get a great taste of authentic Texas beef burger and a feel for old school Austin, and stop at Hut's any day of the week.
