Who am I to waste a drive through Somerville MA? Even though these diners were closed by the time we rolled into town, they're still worthy of inclusion on the Retro Roadmap. So get to Somerville early, and get your dine-on :-)
Kelly's Diner - Ball Square
It's easy to tell when and who built this shiny stainless steel diner in Ball Square, as the curved glass window proudly notes that this is a 1953 Jerry O'Mahony diner. Much newer and larger than Buddy's, this is the place to take the fam, to sit at one of the "Fifties-a-fied" aqua and pink booths or counter stools, or one of the vintage Formica kitchen tables.
Though Kelly's is nestled into it's corner of Ball Square (can we have any more geometric references?!) as if it was here forever, research reveals that this diner has only been here since 1995, having been moved all the way up from Delaware. We've driven that stretch ourselves, and I can only imagine what it was like to maneuver a diner on some of those roads!
