Opened in 1929 and the only Loew’s Wonder Theatre outside of New York, the Loew’s Jersey Theatre in Jersey City is a delight to behold.
Once inside the stories-high lobby you can’t help but gaze upward in amazement at the opulent baroque gilded decor, crystal chandeliers and rococo decorations as far as the eye can see.
Like many historic theaters Jersey City’s Loew’s had its ups and downs. Twinned in the 1970s, closed in the 1980s for over 10 years, fell into disrepair and was vandalized - even slated for demolition!
Finally designated as a New Jersey Registered Historical site, it has been kept open and updated by the dedicated souls known as the Friends of the Loews. This volunteer group meets weekly for cleaning, projects, anything and everything they can do to keep the doors open so the community can enjoy this gem. Are you handy? Be a Friend and help them out!
Throughout the temperate months (there’s currently no air-conditioning) you can see live music onstage and classic films on their massive screen, often welcomed by prior to the show with tunes played on their restored Wonder Morton Theater Organ, owned by the Garden State Theatre Organ Society.

Outside gaze upwards above the terracotta facade and note the clock depicting St. George slaying a dragon, and believe that maybe one day the volunteers will have financial help to slay the ravages of time, and bring this theater back to its rightful glorious place in the community, and our country.
Don’t fight for a street parking space, there’s a garage in the back
