How fun for two Retro Roadmap-worthy places to be next door neighbors, especially when they compliment each other so nicely. This pairing practically insists that you make an evening of it in downtown Morristown, located in the heart of this National Historic District.
Built originally as a movie house, The Community Theatre opened in 1937. Impassioned volunteers throughout the decades have helped reinvent this suburban performance space as a destination for live acts including music, comedy, drama and more. Its simple brick exterior with Corinthian pillars and front additions may make it appear newer than its 80+ year history, but inside you’ll see why it was declared an Outstanding Historic Theatre by the League of Historic American Theatres.
Why Mayo, you may(o) ask? Not the condiment but renamed in 2011 for A. Dale "Bud" Mayo, founder of Clearview Cinemas, former chairman of the board and patron of the theater.
The adjacent Vail Mansion was built as a private residence between 1916-18, but for over 70 years housed Morristown’s municipal offices.
Since 2014 this fabulous marble lined Italianate Renaissance space has been reinvented as Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen. Whether you want to enjoy a pre-theater cocktail at the airy Oyster Bar, library-like Vail Bar or perhaps ascend the sweeping double-wide staircase to the fine dining area, restaurateur Chris Cannon has ensured that each spot in this dramatic building highlights its historic details while showcasing its more contemporary art collection, breathing new life into this 100+ year old space.
The Rathskeller at JHBK is open for weekend subterranean noshing, with outdoor seating in the nice weather.
Get to the theater early and visit their gallery featuring local artwork
There’s free WiFi at the theater, but be in the now, not on the internet, suggests Mod Betty!
