Trying to take the "back way" from PA to NC reminded me of my very first road trip - when I thought my sister and I could make it from Mass to Florida by taking nothing but Route 1. We quickly found out that we'd barely be out of Connecticut before it was time to turn around and head home.
Luckily I didn't learn my lesson back then , or else I never would have seen this beacon of a sign while Retro Roadhusband and I were on Route 11 driving through the center of Chambersburg PA on the way to North Carolina.
As you can tell from the indigo of the sky, we were way past waffle time when we were driving by, but I made RRH pull over so I could snap a photo.
According to a 2007 post by Brian Butko on the Lincoln Highway News, The Molly Pitcher Waffle Shop is open 8-3 Monday through Saturday. One thing also mentioned in Brian's report is that the chicken & waffles are the Pennsylvania Dutch version, with gravy. Before reading that I had never heard of the gravy version and was only familiar with the delicious "Roscoe's Fried Chicken & Waffles" in Los Angeles, where we indulged the last time we were in L.A. (and I first heard of in the movie Tapeheads , their commercial for Roscoe's still cracks me up! ) I guess I'll have to go investigate this local gravy version!
There were plenty of other neat things to see in the short time we were on the back roads, so I'll be back soon!
