Retro Roadmapper Jennifer Andrews and her husband Ted stopped at Maine's Moody Diner recently, and knowing it was just up our alley, they were kind enough to snap these photos so we could add this iconic place to the Main Retro Roadmap!
Jennifer writes:
We drove by this place and had to stop. It was started in 27 as cabins and a tea room, and grew to a lunch wagon in 1934.It was expanded again in the 40s and 50s (They had a whole history book in the dining room.)
The cabins are also available to rent. We drove back to look at them but they were all occupied.
Here's a shot of their immediately recognizable neon sign. Those of us who grew up in New England know this is pretty fancy stuff for the plain state of Maine!
While the diner itself is not a true "built in a factory then hauled to site" diner, it still offers counter and booth seating, home cooked foods and vintage charm that has been earned not installed as a decorative afterthought.
Taking a gander at their online menu, you'll spy all sorts of classic "down east / up north " foods to choose from - fried clams, blueberry pie, lobster roll for example. Daily specials also include some classics like roast turkey, Yankee pot roast, turkey pot pie and boiled dinner. Nothing says New England like those plain but hearty meals.
I spy a whoopie pie, Westminster Oyster crackers, and well worn Formica counter. Add those ubiquitous glass diner salt, pepper, sugar shakers and a coffee cup emblazoned with the Moody's Diner logo and Mod B is swoonin!
One other thing Mod B digs about Moody's is not only is it a place to grab something to eat, but also they have cabins to rent (May 15 - Oct 15) - so once you have your fill of pie for breakfast (a Maine tradition, at least according to my mother, who has roots in Maine) you can head back to your cabin to doze!
Thanks Jennifer and Ted for sharing this legendary place with your fellow Retro Roadmappers!
