Get out your camera when you're driving south of Pittsburgh, and be on the lookout for a Paul Bunyanesque Muffler Man - as reported by RRMP Reader Matt Smallwood.
(Matt submitted the photo too- thanks Matt!)
He's outside Mr. Tire Repair Shop in Uniontown, PA. Pittsburgh St., or PA Rte. 51 that runs in front of the small lot - preventing me from getting a good front shot without standing in the street!
RoadsideAmerica.com also talks about this guy outside what must be the same repair shop, under a different name. But he didn't have the nifty astroturf under his feet, just dirt in the same stone base.
Indeed they do talk about him! Referred to as their Paul Bunyan statue, here are some other interesting details about this Roadside Giant:
His shoe size is 48 inches, his hat size is 7 feet 9 inches in circumference, he is 20 feet 6 in. tall, and weighs 820 lbs. He was made in California and first became a full time worker for Fayette Tire shop in 1964. He was purchased at a Tire convention in Washington DC.
What a nice way to start the week - with a Retro Roadmap Reader Recommendation!
UPDATE! Over at the Retro Roadmap Facebook Page (you Have "Liked" us, right?! ;-)) we've been trying to figure out what is the closest Muffler Man to Retro Roadmap HQ and otther Retro Roadmap readers have been chiming in. Thanks to the swell resources of Roadside America (one of our fave sites) you can check their Muffler Man Map and see if there's a Muffler Man - or Lady! Near YOU!
Very nice, Beth. Thank you so much for the acknowledgment. You do a fine job of writing on this site. Think you have a book in you? Travel book for those that don’t use the internet??? 🙂
