Meaning no disrespect to “mibsters” (aka folks who play Marbles, or marble shooters) out there, but Mod Betty was under the impression that the game of marbles was a pastime that had been left in the past, along with jacks, jumping rope and hopscotch. That is why I’m super thrilled to let everyone know that not only is the game of Marbles alive, but that it has a National Tournament occurring annually here in Wildwood since 1922.

Held at “Ringer Stadium” at Wildwood Avenue and the Boardwalk (conveniently located next to Douglass Fudge!) you can spot the 10 competition rings of yellow and aqua in the sand.

Each June mibsters between the ages of 8-14 come from across the country to play marbles and compete for national honors, college scholarships, prizes and awards. Many participants come from families where the game of marbles has been played for generations. At the end of the multi-day event, the winners - one boy and one girl - are crowned the King and Queen of Marbles.

If you miss the national tournament but are still intrigued by this sport you can explore the artifacts of it at the National Marbles Hall of Fame, located within the Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce. There you’ll see all sorts of memorabilia of the sport’s origins on display, photos of past champions, trophies and more.

As a bonus, since you’re in there you can gather up brochures from local businesses, hotels, restaurants and events, ensuring a well rounded visit to Wildwood.
