I know what you mean- after re-living our short swing through Bedford while writing these posts, I wanted to hop in the car and head out there again myself!

A Pink Bathroom in a Knotty Pine Room. Now, where are the Red Geraniums, and we’d have a hat trick!

I can’t be 100% sure, but if you take a look at the 2nd photo ( courtesy of Mary Deluxe) it looks like the window box has some leggy red geraniums in it— Trifecta!

This place is cool. I’m hoping we can stay there some time and support those nice owners.

I’ve stayed at Myer’s Motel in Milford, PA. They have cabins also, although if I remember these were double cabins not singles

The only one in the entire state? That’s truly incredible. There are quite a few remaining in Western North Carolina, but they are a dying breed. Too of the best ones in my area have been bulldozed in the past year or two, and many are now “apartments.”

Looks like I need to get some photos of the remaining ones!

I’ve been told it’s the only one, but I’d be happy to know there are more of them in PA!

This reminds me of a family road trip in 1961, when I was 13. We stopped at one of these places in Hillsboro, Ohio. There were five of us, and normally we split up in two rooms. But this night the dice (or more likely, the beds), fell differently, and I got my own room! I believe it was half of a duplex cabin rather than an individual cabin, but I’m not sure. I remember the manager showing me how to operate the window A/C and suggested I put it on “night cool.”

That night was like I was going on my very own road trip, although I was too young to even drive.

Tom, what a cool memory to have! We didn’t do much if any vacationing when I was growing up, so I think that’s why I have such an enthusiasm for these types of places. Thanks so much for sharing your story and for swinging by Retro Roadmap!

My grandfather constructed these cabins back in the 40’s, they’re actually located at the top of Tulls Hill right along Rt. 30 (The Lincoln Highway) not in Manns Choice which is about 8 miles away, as the crow flies.

I can’t believe I just saw this! This is Debbie Altizer the owner of Lincoln Motor Court. I have not run across your grandfather’s name in research. Can you tell me more? You can call us here at the motor court. Thank you!

There is a little cabin hotel in Manchester, VT. I cannot remember the name of it, but it was in operation as of October 2004. Very, very cute.

That would be neat if it was still there! There used to be so many of these around, but people’s taste in accommodations change. I still dig the “Monopoly Houses” though 🙂

What could be more American than a great cross country road trip and staying at classic motor lodge ??!!
How can you not love these old school retros
They don’t have all the swank and upscale of the fancy chains but they’re true red white and blue Americana and harken back to a great time in our history
The war was over and Americans were ready to cut loose and enjoy life
For years things were rationed especially gas and rubber limiting travel.
Motor courts began springing up across the country and Americans flocked to them
But like any great idea someone found a way to do it cheaper
It wasn’t long before the big chain hotel/motel industry moved in putting these great mom and pop courts out of business
I have great memories of traveling from Ohio to Arkansas as a young kid and staying at these wonderful places
The folks who operated them were always very warm and down to earth people happy to have you.
You’ll never get that kind of friendly reception and service from any big chain operation
I’d love to see them make a comeback along with those awesome drive in movie theaters !!!
There’s nothing better than pure Americana !!!!!!!

I stayed there in 2015 and got the Honeymoon Cottage. I loved it. I’m already booked for this summer. Ms. Altizer says she likes to keep the rates low so families can enjoy a visit, but I’d be happy to pay more to help save the charming place.

Never been to PA. but I have FLW’s Fallingwater on my bucket list. I’d love to locate this gem and stay a night or two. These ‘motor courts’ are so rare to find, and this one is beyond charming!! (I’d love a tiny cabin just like these for a weekend getaway of my own!!)
