Mod B recently visited South Philly, and found a little neighborhood on Ritner Street a few blocks off of Broad Street that is an absolute treasure she's excited to share with you.
First stop: Ritner Hardware - a "fixer-upper's fixture" for 70+ years!
Opened originally by Tony and Anna Lauriello in 1946, since 1975 it has been in the Frumento family. Patriarch Tony and his son Anthony will greet you with a friendly hello as soon as you enter this small corner shop.
While the shop is small on the inside, they’re big in what they offer - most notably friendly and helpful service, and so many things those big box stores don’t bother to carry.
Percolator tops, contact paper, doorbells, kitchen gadgets, hardware and more, displayed from ceiling to well-worn floor. They also replace windows, screens, fix lamps, and if they don't do it they know someone who does!
I’m sure you’ll find something here you forgot you needed, and if all else fails, you can always get a replacement house key cut, like Mod B did.
Even though this is kind of a "locals" place, both of the “Tonys” make you feel at home as soon as you walk through the door, making you want to come back again - I know I am planning on it. It's nice to feel like a welcomed neighbor, even when you live miles away!
