As you can see from our photo below they have not really changed the decor in all those years - which is a wise move! Not only because it's RetroRoadmap Worthy but their "period decor" has made them a location for movies, commercials, videos, and print ads.
We had no idea we were in the midst of such fame when we sat down at our boomerang Formica table, but later learned that Diners Drive-ins and Dives had stopped by the Silver Skillet to sample their biscuits and country ham (two of my fave things!) -
You can even see glimpses of our seasoned and sassy waitress in the DDD video - I swear she called RetroRoadhusband hon, sweetie, darling more than I do! Ah, those Southern belles.
The Silver Skillet is one of those places in Atlanta that you fill out your order form yourself (the other place we encountered this was Mary Mac's Tea Room, to be featured soon.) It was a bit difficult to decide what to order from their wide menu of breakfast options but we made our choices, they were clarified and approved by our waitress and sent to the kitchen.
I was recalling fondly the breakfast sandwich with country ham, lettuce and tomato I got at Dude's Drive-in in Christiansburg VA but had also done some advanced finagling so I could sample some of the biscuits that RetroRoadhusband ordered. I do loves me some biscuits, and these were the best ones we had on our entire trip.
They were light, flaky just made for butter and jelly. Our breakfasts were equally as good, but I was so excited about our food coming that I neglected to even snap a photo of my sandwich. It was a great combination of salty ham, crunchy lettuce and grilled bread, I wolfed it down before I even thought to take a photo. In fact I'm getting hungry for one right now!
We paid our bill at the counter, and I loved the homey touch of reading glasses to share with customers. What a simple gesture, yet appreciated I'm sure by the folks who want to read the paper with their meal. Customer service at its best.
A quick shot of the vintage Lifesavers display laden with candy (I had the opportunity to buy one of these once and am still kicking myself for not doing it) - and then we were off on our journey. Mallow cups, peppermint sticks, Necco wafers and Mallo Cups - vintage candy vending at its best!
One thing to note is that you need to exit the restaurant to reach the bathrooms instead of going through the kitchen. It's a bit of an odd setup, but once you get to the "ladies" or "gents" they're totally fine. I'd put up with that idiosyncrasy for that tasty food anytime!
