Sasparilla and Birch Soda are a bit tough to mix the hootch with; they’re palatable, though not really spectacular, with some light rum (try a Flor de Ca√±a rather than the ubiquitous, less flavorful Bacardi). As far as vintage tonics go, I find the best mix to be Moxie and bourbon/sour mash – Jack Daniels or Bulleit Bourbon work really well.
A note about the company store — it says it’s open from 9-6 daily on the sign, seen in the top photo, but it’s actually open from 8-4. I got there about 4:30 and learned the hard way. I think they should change the sign!
Aw dang! Sorry that happened BrC. I’ll note it on the original post. I try to give as much info that’s available, but have to rely on the accuracy of the places themselves!
Just found an old glass marked Simpson Spring Nerve Tonic. Just wondering if these are repro and sold in theirngift shop.
I FIRST STARTED SELLING SIMPSON SPRING BEVERAGES
IN 1934 WHEN I WAS 7 YEARS OLD AND WORKED IN MY UNCLE’S ARTHUR’S WONDERFUL AK MARKET ON THE CORNER OF BRENT AND WASHINGTON STS IN DORCHESTER, MASS. I LOVED THE COFFEE SODA THE BEST WE ADDED VANILLA FRESH ICE CREAM OR HEAVY CREAM
IT WAS DELICIOUS PARTICULARLY IN THE SUMMER
I CAN STILL REMEMBER IT AFTER ALL THESE YEARS
THANK YOU FOR PRODUCING SUCH A HIGH QUALITY PRODUCT.

September 14, 2009 at 1:46 pmI’ve driven by this place and never knew they sold anything other than spring water. Thanks for the tip. There’s a similar deal called Yacht Club Beverages (since 1915!) in North Providence, RI (on Rt 44). Cool deco sign out front (in a rotary) that looks like it was painted in the 20’s. Tonic is heavy duty glass bottles. no HF Corn Syrup, lots of flavors, seltzers too. They can be ordered online – http://www.yachtclubbeverages.com – but you won’t get to see that sign.

September 14, 2009 at 8:31 pmI highly recommend any of the vintage-styled seltzers or ginger ales from places such as these in your [Rye/Scotch/Bourbon] Highballs — they taste so much better than what you can buy from Corporate Sodaville (or is that Tonictown?). And grab some of those colas made with real sugar for your Cuba Libres (especially if you sneak some Havana Club over the Canadian border — vama√±os!)

September 14, 2009 at 8:39 pmWhat do you think would mix well with Sarsaparilla? I would love to have a cocktail with Sarsaparilla or White Birch Soda in it, just because it would be so old-timey, and I just finally learned how to spell “sasparilla” 🙂
