Updated October 2016 with new website address for the motel - check it out!
You never know who knows what is "Retro Roadmap worthy" until you chat with them, and that's how I randomly found out about a number of cool old places from Martin Murphy of the Museum of Missing History. The Stardust Motel in Wallace Idaho is just one of the places he was kind enough to share with us!
Martin and I met while chatting with fab gal Trish Sie after TEDx Phoenixville and he mentioned that he and his gf had taken photos of some vintage places and signs on their trip in a 1968 Volkswagen Type III Squareback on a 3 week drive across the country:
While they did not stay at the Stardust Motel it looks like it's a "nice, modest, clean" place to stay according to the Trip Advisor reviews. (though, as I always say, let your instincts be your guide whenever you decide to stay at a vintage motel/hotel!)
This photo of the exterior of the Stardust from Flickr member Roberto41144 shows it's definitely in keeping with our Retro Roadmap delight with older but well kept motels: And according to this website, as a guest of the Stardust you can also use the amenities at the Wallace Inn just down the street:
Enjoy the best of two worlds: an economical room close to the wild times found at "Center of the Universe," and yet just a few blocks from the Wallace Inn, where you are welcome to use their indoor pool, hot tub, steam room, sauna and exercise room.
So if you're in the Wallace ID area, consider snapping a photo of that great vintage sign, or staying a night at the Stardust Motel.
I certainly would! Now I know where we’ll stay when we head out that way. I say When and not If, as I want to visit every state in the US at least once 🙂
