Ooh I always get so psyched when I receive a writeup and recommendation from a Retro Roadmap Reader - this one for the Maples Motel in Sandusky Ohio comes from Maureen K in Pittsburgh, who writes:
I noticed that The Maples Motel in Sandusky Ohio isn't mentioned. It is a really great place to stay. I should know because I'm a repeat customer.
The motel was built around 1950 and very little has changed since then. Prior to building the motel, the place was a motor court that goes back to the 30'-40's. Four of the original cabins were saved and put out on the "back forty" and called Sunset Lodge.
They are still in use by today. While the motel has central air and heat, the Lodge rooms come with a box fan and extra blankets. There is also a figure 8 swimming pool that is kept sparkling clean and a basketball hoop in the back.
Basketballs are available in the office.
The location is great--its on Route 6 between the two entrances to Cedar Point, and in addition there are two nature reserves one either side and an Ohio Metropark across the street. It has an expansive lawn where kids can play and its also pet friendly on a person to person basis. Its about a 15 minute ride to the ferry that takes you to the Lake Erie Islands.
The best part of The Maples Motel is Joan Faber, the third generation owner and manager and her son Steve. Never have I met friendlier folks than them.
They will help get you going in the right direction regardless if its shopping, to Cedar Point, or anywhere else you want to go. In the morning coffee, donuts and juice are served in the office. The donuts come from Jolly Donuts which is also worthy of mention on the road map. The glazed donuts are to die for.
(The yellow car in front of the Motel is a Rambler Classic ca. 1962-65 and belongs to Joan's son Steve who totally drives it around and it adds to the charm and decor of the place.)
Only one drawback for some folks--definitely not me--is the train that passes by at least 6-12 times a day including early morning and late at night. I love it and feel that it adds to the charm and feel. Well, I've made my case and I hope that you will add the Maples to your retro road map.
Happy traveling!
Happy Traveling to you too Maureen! And as an expression of my gratitude, I'm popping a Retro Roadmap magnet into the mail for you. Perfect for your car, fridge, work cube or other magnetic place, it's a reminder to stop at cool old places like this!
