When Mod Betty travels the first thing she scopes out is if a destination has a tiki bar, and Chicago's Three Dots & A Dash does not disappoint!
(If you're wondering about the name, it's from an old Don the Beachcomber drink: "Three dots and a dash" is Morse code for the letter V, used to symbolize victory in World War II.)
While it has been open since 2013, we only got a chance to visit it recently. It's easier to find now than when it was first opened, just follow the tiki torches down the alley. Once you're let into this subterranean speakeasy its like you've left the modern world behind and been transported elsewhere. The past, a tropical destination, wherever is your happy place.
Three Dots and a Dash has been on my must-do list and I was so happy that our short stop in town aligned with their 4pm opening - giving fab mixologist Aiden a chance to guide us through their menu of classic tiki drinks and original cocktails!
Their eponymous drink comes in a custom tiki mug based on their dramatic sub-street entrance, located in a tropically lit alleyway behind their official address.
They've got mugs for sale, super swizzle sticks and tasty snacks - Mod B is a sucker for crab rangoons, but be warned, their drinks pack a punch! We were feeling no pain when we left ( and neither of us even ordered the painkiller!)
While this hidden tiki speakeasy isn't vintage in age, it certainly has its heart in the past, making Three Dots & A Dash completely Retro Roadmap worthy.
